Even though Delta doesn’t publish an award chart and can sometimes charge sky-high rates for mileage redemptions, it does occasionally have massively discounted award flights. Conventional wisdom says award flights from the US to Europe don’t dip below 60,000 SkyMiles round-trip, however, we’re seeing nonstop flights from New York to Europe for as few as 28,000 miles.

The cheapest route is to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH), but you’ll find discounted flights to London (LHR), Paris (CDG) and Rome (FCO), too.

Flights are available from September 2018 through June 2019, and most itineraries include a connection.

If you don’t have enough SkyMiles in your account, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards (instant transfer) or SPG Starpoints (1.5-day transfer) to Delta at a 1:1 ratio. Note that when transferring Starpoints, you’ll get a 5,000-mile bonus for every 20,000 you transfer. Once the miles are in your account, head over to the Delta website and book directly through the airline.

Remember to pay the taxes and fees with a card like the The Platinum Card® from American Express (5x on airfare) or Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x on travel) to maximize your points earnings or the Citi Prestige for its excellent trip delay insurance.

Airline: Delta
Routes: JFK/LGA/EWR to ZRH/FCO/LHR/CDG

The fare war for flights to Europe never fails to amaze. Just yesterday we came across a deal for Primera Air flights to Paris (CDG) from $99 one-way — which is still available. Today we’re seeing cheap flights to other European destinations like Amsterdam (AMS), Copenhagen (CPH), Stockholm (ARN) and Helsinki (HEL) from $299 round-trip. The discounted fares are being offered by Icelandair and are valid for travel this fall. Icelandair isn’t a low-cost carrier, so even its cheapest fares include things like carry-ons, seat assignments and free drinks. TPG Associate Editor Brendan Dorsey flew to Reykjavik on Icelandair’s 767 last year and enjoyed the experience.

To book, head to Google Flights and plug in your desired departure city. After finding dates that work best for you, book with Icelandair directly or with an OTA such as Expedia or Priceline. Remember, Icelandair partners with Alaska Airlines meaning you can earn valuable Alaska miles for these paid fares.

Deal Alert: Fly Across the Country For Just $99 Each Way

Want to see the latest flight deals as soon as they’re published? Follow The Points Guy on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to text message alerts from our deals feed, @tpg_alerts.

Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through the Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.

Transcontinental routes have become one of the fiercest and most lucrative battlegrounds for US carriers. Even while airlines try to feature some of their better premium cabins between the country’s top cities, the competition has also driven them to improve coach by reintroducing free meals and significantly lowering fares. Today we’re seeing that competition in action, with nonstop flights between East Coast cities like Boston (BOS), New York (JFK) and Miami (MIA) and West Coast cities such as Los Angeles (LAX), Las Vegas (LAS) and San Francisco (SFO) starting at just $99 each way.

You don’t need any tricks to book these fares, so head to Google Flights and plug in your desired departure and destination cities. After finding the dates that work best for you, book with directly or with an OTA such as Expedia or Priceline. Most of these options are available on one-way tickets, so you can mix and match airlines in order to complete your round-trip at the best possible prices.

If you have a choice in carrier on the route you want, your top picks should probably be Alaska or JetBlue because they don’t offer stripped-down basic economy options — at least not yet. But if you do get stuck with a basic economy fare, you can defeat many of the downsides by having airline elite status or a co-branded airline credit card.

Airline: Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, United
Routes: BOS/EWR/FLL/JFK/MIA to/from BUR/LAS/LAX/SEA/SFO
Cost: $99+ one-way in economy
Dates: August – November 2018
Booking Link: OrbitzExpedia or directly with the airline
Pay With: The Platinum Card® from American Express (5x on airfare), Chase Sapphire Reserve, Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, Citi Prestige (3x on airfare plus excellent trip delay insurance) or Chase Sapphire Preferred (2x on travel)

Here are a few examples of what you can book:

Boston (BOS) to Las Vegas (LAS) in September for $99 one-way on JetBlue:

Las Vegas (LAS) to Newark (EWR) in September for $101 one-way on United in Basic Economy:

Burbank (BUR) to Boston (BOS) in November for $108 one-way on JetBlue:

Boston (BOS) to Los Angeles (LAX) in November for $113 one-way on Alaska:

Los Angeles (LAX) to Boston (BOS) in November for $113 one-way on Delta in Basic Economy:

Delta Flash Sale: Domestic Awards From 10,000 SkyMiles Round-Trip

$

0

Good news if you’re looking for a domestic deal and have some Delta SkyMiles burning a hole in your pocket. The airline is back with another flash sale on award flights to destinations like Austin (AUS), Boston (BOS), New York City (JFK) and Tampa (TPA).

Delta doesn’t have an award chart, so it’s hard to quantify the amount of the discounts with this sale. But, some of these deals start at just 10,000 SkyMiles round-trip. Based on current TPG valuations, that’s just $120 worth of miles with just $11 of taxes and fees. But, this sale isn’t going to be around for long — tickets must be purchased no later than July 25, 2018.

While the carrier only lists the above routes as being discounted, as is often the case with Delta, we’re finding that this award sale is much more extensive. So, hop onto Delta.com and search around for the route of your choice to see how it’s pricing.

Airline: Delta
Routes: Flights to/from ATL/AUS/BOS/CVG/FLL/JFK/LAX/PWM/SAN/SFO/SLC/TPA and more
Cost: From 10,000 miles plus taxes/fees starting at $11 round-trip. One-way flights are pricing at half of the round-trip price.
Book by: July 25, 2018
Dates: August – November
Restrictions: Terms note that a Saturday night stay is required, but this restriction isn’t being applied in practice.

New York Kennedy (JFK) to Portland, Maine (PWM) for 10,000 miles + $11 round-trip:

Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) for 11,000 miles + $11 round-trip:

Boston (BOS) to Austin (AUS) for 13,000 miles + $11 round-trip:

Cincinnati (CVG) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) for 13,000 miles + $11 round-trip:

Atlanta (ATL) to Tampa (TPA) for 14,000 miles + $11 round-trip:

Salt Lake City (SLC) to San Diego (SAN) for 14,000 miles + $11 round-trip:

Los Angeles (LAX) to Austin (AUS) for 15,000 miles + $11 round-trip:

Although you won’t be able to earn a Delta credit card welcome bonus quick enough to take advantage of this particular discount round, consider applying for a Delta card for the next time the carrier has a sale. Right now, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express comes with a welcome bonus of 30,000 SkyMiles after you spend $1,000 in the first three months. Plus, you’ll get a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your card within the first three months.

If you have a business, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express is offering a 35,000-mile welcome bonus after spending $1,000 in the first three months (you also get 5,000 MQMs). Plus, you’ll get 5x SkyMiles per dollar spent for the first six months up to a total of another 35,000 bonus miles. Combined, you can earn up to 70,000 bonus SkyMiles through this offer.

If your summer vacations plans are still up in the air, — or you’re ready to book your sunny winter or spring break getaways — you might want to consider a trip to Mexico. And thanks to a new deal we’re seeing today, getting there could be a lot more affordable. American, Delta and United are currently offering discounted flights to a trio of Mexican beach destinations — Cancun (CUN), Cabo (SJD) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR) — from over a dozen major US cities, including several in the Northeast. These discounted fares start at under $200 round-trip and are valid for travel from August 2018 through May 2019.

To find these low fares, head to Google Flights and plug in your desired departure and destination cities. After finding the dates that work best for you, book directly with the airline or with an OTA such as Expedia or Priceline. If you want to make sure that your ticket includes a carry-on bag, you can use Google Flights’ newest feature, which allows you to filter out no-carry-on bag fares.

Note that some of these fares are in fact in basic economy, which means you may not get the usual carry-on allowance, be able to select your seat ahead of time, be eligible for an upgrade or earn elite qualifying credits as per usual. However, it’s possible to defeat many of basic economy’s negative aspects by having airline elite status or a co-branded airline credit card.
