Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency such as Orbitz or Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through the Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to get the time away from work or family.

WOW Air is offering another sale for flights to Reykjavik (KEF), with prices starting at just $199 round-trip. The discounted fares are available out of most of the US cities the carrier serves, including Chicago (ORD), New York (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO), and are valid for travel from August to November. Unlike some of its previous sales, you don’t need a promo code to score these low fares.

Your best bet for finding these bargains is to head to Google Flights and plug in your desired departure and destination cities. After finding the dates that work best for you, book directly with WOW Air or with an OTA such as Expedia or Priceline. There’s no telling how long these fares will be around, so it’ll be better to book sooner rather than later.

Keep in mind that WOW Air is a low-cost carrier and will charge you for things that are sometimes complimentary. Fees you’ll pay range from meals to seat assignments to checked baggage and more. So, while some fares may seem too good to pass up, keep in mind that if you want to customize your trip, you’ll have to pay more. Check out what the WOW Air experience was like when TPG’s Brendan Dorsey flew it and when Managing Editor Alberto Riva flew its biz product.

Seats aboard WOW Air’s A330s are laid out in a 2-4-2 configuration.

Right now, TPG is seeing great deals from several carriers to Mexico — this time to San José del Cabo (SJD). It’s a great beach destination, and if you still haven’t vacationed this summer, you can fly out on this deal as soon as next month. Round-trip fares begin right at $201, and you can fly from Cleveland (CLE), Dallas (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), Oakland (OAK) and Orange County (SNA).

Keep in mind that some of the good deals are available on low-cost carriers or in basic economy seats. That means that added fees are expected, but shouldn’t necessarily be a deal-breaker — there’s still lots of room for savings.

To book, go ahead and search for dates on Google Flights to find the cheapest times to fly. You can then book directly through the airline or through Orbitz or Expedia, if you prefer.

Airlines: Alaska, American, Spirit
Routes: CLE/DFW/LAX/OAK/SNA to SJD
Cost: $201+ round-trip in economy
Dates: August 2018 – June 2019
Booking Link: OrbitzExpedia or directly with the airline
Pay With: The Platinum Card® from American Express (5x on airfare), Chase Sapphire ReservePremier Rewards Gold Card from American ExpressCiti Prestige (3x on airfare plus excellent trip delay insurance) or Chase Sapphire Preferred (2x on travel)

Check out a few of the many good deals to take advantage of below:

Dallas (DFW) to San José del Cabo, Mexico (SJD) for $202 round-trip nonstop on Spirit:

Los Angeles (LAX) to San José del Cabo, Mexico (SJD) for $212 round-trip nonstop on Alaska:

Now’s a great time to book a trip to Chicago (ORD). American and United are currently offering flights to the Windy City — and vice versa — from major cities like Boston (BOS), Dallas (DFW) and New York (LGA) from $88 round-trip nonstop. Although the discounted fares are for basic economy, AA announced today that basic economy passengers will be allowed to travel with a carry-on bag (in addition to a personal item) starting September 5, so you might want to consider AA over United.

To find these low fares, head to Google Flights and plug in your desired departure and destination cities. After finding the dates that work best for you, book directly with the airline or with an OTA such as Expedia or Priceline. Google Flights has a feature which allows you to filter out no-carry-on bag fares, but it has not been updated yet to reflect AA’s changes. As a reminder, it’s possible to defeat many of basic economy’s negative aspects by having airline elite status or a co-branded airline credit card.

Airlines: American, United
Routes: BOS/DFW/IAH/JFK/LAS/LAX/LGA/MIA/PHX to/from ORD
Cost: $88+ round-trip in economy
Dates: August – December 2018
Booking Link: OrbitzExpedia or directly with the airline

Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. We recommend you use Google Flights to find dates to fly, then book through an online travel agency such as Orbitzor Expedia, which allows you to cancel flights without penalty by 11pm Eastern Time within one day of booking.

American, Delta and Xiamen are offering cheap fares to China’s capital city in business class. With this latest deal, you can fly from a few US cities to Beijing (PEK) from $1,994 round-trip in a lie-flat seat. We’re seeing the cheapest fares from Los Angeles (LAX), but prices from Boston (BOS) and New York (JFK) aren’t that much more. While cheap economy seats to China are pretty common, these discounted business-class fares don’t come around all that often and could be a great idea if you’re looking to close-in on elite status for the year.

There are no tricks needed to find these fares — just pick the dates you want by searching with Google Flights. While these are great deals, it’s still a significant cash outlay. So, it’s particularly important to remember your best options for booking these flights:

Unless you book a flight to a third country, you can’t take advantage of China’s “visa-free transit” policy. So, make sure you get the right visa before traveling or you won’t even be able to get on the planeTPG recommends using a third-party service like Allied Passport & Visa, and if you mention The Points Guy on your order form, you’ll get a $5 discount.

Deal Alert: Frontier Flash Sale With Fares From $15 One-Way

$

Want to see the latest flight deals as soon as they’re published? Follow The Points Guy on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to text message alerts from our deals feed, @tpg_alerts.

Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to line-up the time away.

Ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is advertising its “best sale of the season,” with one-way base fares starting at just a penny. With taxes, the price you pay is closer to $15 per one-way booking than just a penny, but that’s still a very attractive entry-level price to fly with your family at 36,000 feet. To jump on this Frontier sale, you must book by August 1, 2018, and fly on select dates from August 14 to October 3, 2018. The cheapest dates to fly can quickly be spotted by using Frontier’s monthly calendar view when you search for flights on its site.

When pricing out flights for your family on Frontier Airlines, you’ll need to factor in the additional fees you may incur, including charges for full-size carry-on bags, checked bags and seat assignments. While these expenses can increase your overall total beyond $15 per one-way ticket, with prices as low as $120 round-trip for a family of four, you may still come out way ahead even when factoring in some fees.

When flying on ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs), which charge extra for everything, my family of four typically spends the extra money for advance seat assignments and purchases the ability to bring on board a couple of full-sized carry-on bags, supplemented by everyone packing in their own free standard-sized backpacks. If factoring in those fees plus the base fares still represents a substantial savings over traditional air carriers, we will pull the trigger and pack light. That said, in the case of extreme delays or cancellations, we have our miles on other airlines to serve as a back-up plan, as well as knowing we have some built-in protections from paying for our airfare with a card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Frontier Airlines $15 sale

Note that depending on when the school year starts for your area, a few of the dates included as part of this sale may work for a later summer getaway — a perfect opportunity to book a last-minute summer vacation while taking advantage of cheap airfare.

You’ll want to check out Frontier’s Best Deals Sale page to view all eligible $15 routes, but we will highlight a few examples below. Remember to act quickly if you see something you like, as this sale ends on August 1, and rates can change at anytime.

Airline: Frontier
Routes: Various domestic routes
Cost: $15+ one-way
Dates: August 14 to October 3, 2018

Every so often Amtrak offers a “flash sale,” such as Northeast regional routes from $19 one-way. Amtrak is back with another one of these sales, this time, dubbed the “Amtrak Across America” sale.

Now through August 3, Amtrak is offering up to 30% off the standard coach fare on many of its routes. Although you have to book by Friday, you can score the low fares for travel from August 15, 2018, through February 28, 2019. As the sale’s name suggests, the discount is valid toward travel across the nation, so your best bet would be to head to Amtrak’s site and search for tickets to various destinations you’re interested in visiting. Routes that are part of the sale include the Empire Builder, Downeaster and the Missouri River Runner, among others. Do note that the sale is exclusively for one-way coach fares and that upgrades are not permitted.

Besides sometimes being quicker and cheaper than flying, Amtrak offers ample legroom, no middle seats and Wi-Fi on many of its trains. As a reminder, Amtrak recently implemented some changes (both positive and negative) to its offerings, such as Boar’s Head onboard menu items and less generous cancellation and refund policies.

Here are a few examples of what you can book:

Chicago (CHI) to St. Louis (STL) in December for $13 one-way:

Seattle (SEA) to Vancouver (VAC) in October for $32 one-way:

Washington DC (WAS) to Pittsburgh (PGH) in November for $37 one-way:

Cheap flight deals to Hong Kong have almost become a norm. Although we spotted some premium economy fares from $847 round-trip (some of which are still available) on Tuesday, the discounted fares usually exclude premium cabins. Well, today we’re seeing flights from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and New York (JFK) to Hong Kong (HKG) from $1,932 round-trip in business class. While the cheapest fares are being offered by Chinese carriers Air China, China Eastern and Xiamen Airlines, some more popular airlines like Philippine Airlines and Finnair are offering discounted tickets as well. Philippine Airlines and Finnair both fly their new A350s out of JFK so you can expect their latest and greatest business class products on these routes. TPG Editor-at-Large Zach Honig flew business class on Finnair’s A350 in November and enjoyed the flight.

While most of these flights can be found on Google Flights, Philippine Airlines flights sometimes take longer to appear and don’t always show on the low-fare calendar. After finding dates that work best for you, book with the airline directly or with an OTA such as Expedia or Priceline. As a reminder, cheap business class flights on foreign carriers are a great way of racking up miles.
