Deal Alert: Delta Awards to Australia From 58,000 SkyMiles Round-Trip

$

Want to see the latest flight deals as soon as they’re published? Follow The Points Guy on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to text message alerts from our deals feed, @tpg_alerts.

Although Delta’s SkyMiles program doesn’t have the best reputation, it frequently has flash sales for award flights featuring fantastic deals such as flights to Asia for 50,000 SkyMiles round-trip, Bermuda for 12,000 SkyMilesMexico for 12,000 SkyMiles and London for 36,000 SkyMiles. And now, flights to Australia from 58,000 SkyMiles round-trip.

At current TPG valuations, 58,000 SkyMiles are worth approximately $696. Adding in taxes of around $118 brings the total value of these awards to just over $800 round-trip. While that’s generally a good deal for flights to Australia, we’ve seen really good deals to Australia recently. So check the cash prices for these trips to make sure that it’s not better to pay cash or redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points through the Chase travel portal for flights instead. For example, the recent $695 round-trip deals would only cost 46,333 points — and require no out-of-pocket cost.

Although Delta’s deal website only lists five departure cities for this deal, we are seeing quite a few other airports included. The deal dates of Aug. 8 through Dec. 9, however, seem to be universal to all routes. Given how widespread this sale is, your best bet would be to head to Delta.com and search around for the route of your choice to see how it’s pricing. The sale ends Aug. 8, 2018, at 11:59pm ET, so you’ll want to book soon if you want to take advantage of the deal.

Airline: Delta
Routes: US Cities (SEA/PDX/ATL/JFK/LAX/MSP/DCA and others) to SYD
Cost: 58,000+ SkyMiles and $113+ round-trip in economy
Dates: Aug. 8 to Dec. 9, although exact dates depend on the route
Booking Link: Directly with Delta
Pay Taxes/Fees With: The Platinum Card® from American Express (5x on airfare), Chase Sapphire Reserve, Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, Citi Prestige (3x on airfare plus excellent trip-delay insurance) or Chase Sapphire Preferred (2x on travel)

Here are a few examples of what you can book:

Seattle (SEA) to Sydney (SYD) for 58,000 miles + $118 in taxes and fees round-trip in September:

Portland (PDX) to Sydney (SYD) for 58,000 miles + $118 in taxes and fees round-trip in October:

Atlanta (ATL) to Sydney (SYD) for 64,000 miles + $118 in taxes and fees round-trip in October:

New York-JFK to Sydney (SYD) for 64,000 miles + $118 in taxes and fees round-trip in November:

Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) to Sydney (SYD) for 64,000 miles + $118 in taxes and fees round-trip in November:

Washington DC Reagan National (DCA) to Sydney (SYD) for 64,000 miles + $118 in taxes and fees round-trip in October:

Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD) for 64,000 miles + $113 in taxes and fees round-trip nonstop in December:

Check out this post for more on maximizing airfare purchases.

If you don’t have enough SkyMiles in your account, consider signing up for one of the Delta credit cards to ensure you’re able to take advantage of a deal next time one pops up. For example, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express currently comes with a bonus of 60,000 SkyMiles after you spend $3,000 in the first four months. Offer ends Sept. 19. Also, this is a great card for defeating basic economy.

Deal Alert: Top-Notch Business Class Flights to Asia From $1,249 One-Way; $2,029 Round-Trip

Historically, it was nearly impossible to get cheap international one-way flights — making points & miles options particularly valuable for those not traveling on a simple round-trip. With the expansion of low-cost international airlines, now it’s not rare to see $99 one-way flights to Europe. However, cheap international one-way business class flights on legacy carriers have remained somewhat of a unicorn. Today, we have a few unicorn sightings.

Besides being able to fly to Asia for just over $1,200, the best part of these options is that they’re on top-notch US-based carriers. These aren’t smoke-filled China Eastern aircraft or “satisfactory” Hainan business class products. Instead, you’ll be flying on some of the best that Delta and American Airlines have to offer — and not the worst United product either.

Business class on American Airlines
Business class on American Airlines’ 787-9 is quite the comfortable way to hop the Pacific. Image by the author.

These one-way fares can be great if you have enough points and can find availability to book a premium cabin one direction but not both. Or, this can be great for flexible travelers who’d love to position from the US to Asia. If you’re looking to fly round-trip in business class, there’s some great round-trip fares too starting at just $2,030 round-trip.

Here’s an overview of the elite and award mileage earning potential from these flights:

Although Delta hasn’t had a published award chart since February 2015, it does offer award flash sales fairly regularly. Destinations have included flights to Asia for 50,000 SkyMiles round-trip, Bermuda for 12,000 SkyMilesMexico for 12,000 SkyMiles, and London for 36,000 SkyMiles.

Just this Saturday, Delta launched an award sale to Australia for just 58,000 SkyMiles round-trip. And Sunday, we are seeing a domestic award sale with routes as cheap as 10,000 SkyMiles round-trip. For reference, even on an American Airlines nonstop flight of under 500 miles booked with a reduced mileage award code would still cost 13,000 round-trip.

At current TPG valuations, 10,000 SkyMiles are worth approximately $120. Adding in taxes of just $11 brings the total value of these awards to as little as $131 round-trip.

Given how widespread this sale is, your best bet would be to head to Delta.com and search around for the route of your choice to see how it’s pricing. The sale ends Aug. 8 at 11:59pm ET, so you’ll want to book soon if you want to take advantage of the deal.

Southwest just launched a flash sale which could help you save on your next getaway. With this sale, you can score both domestic and international fares from $49 one-way or $98 round-trip. The discounted fares are valid for travel from August 21, 2018 through February 13, 2019, including dates that could overlap with your holiday travel plans.

While the low fares will only stick around until August 16, you can still take advantage of the sale if you booked your flights before it launched. Thanks to Southwest’s incredibly generous no change fee policy, if the price of your previously purchased flights dropped, you can rebook your flights at the lower rates and be credited the difference. Plus, Southwest let’s you check two bags for free. Factors like these helped Southwest land the top spot in TPG’s 2018 Best Airlines for Families rankings.

Since Southwest’s fares don’t appear on Google Flights or OTAs like Expedia, your best bet for finding availability is by searching with Southwest’s flexible dates calendar and selecting the dates that work best for you. To see a list of the routes and cities eligible as part of this sale, check out this page.

Now’s the time to book your next trip to Europe! Today we’re seeing discounted flights from East and West coast cities to many destinations throughout Europe, including Amsterdam (AMS), Barcelona (BCN), Paris (CDG) and Rome (FCO). What that means is that you’ll often need to pay for things like seat assignments and checked bags, but you’ll still get the usual onboard experience with free food and drinks. However, some co-branded credit cards can help get around the pitfalls of basic economy.

To find these low fares head to Google Flights and plug in your desired departure and destination cities. After finding the dates that work best for you, book directly with the airline or with an OTA such as Expedia or Priceline.

After becoming ubiquitous in Europe, FlixBus launched its first US routes on May 31. Having used FlixBus often in Europe, we were curious to see how the big green bus did here in the US. So, TPG contributor Katie Genter made sure to be on board to review the inaugural bus from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. While it’s not as nice as flying in a semi-private jet between the two cities, FlixBus is a step-up from Megabus.

However, it doesn’t seem like bookings have taken off like the company hoped. So, FlixBus has launched a flash sale with rides available for just $0.99 one-way plus a $2 booking fee.

Before we get into the details and examples, here’s FlixBus’ current route map for reference if this deal is relevant for you:

Cost: $3+ one-way
Dates: now through September 5
Book by: midnight Pacific Time on August 9
Booking Link:
OrbitzExpedia or directly with the airline
Pay With: Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x on travel), Chase Sapphire Preferred (2x on travel) or Citi Prestige (1x but good trip delay insurance)

Here are a few examples of what you can book:

Phoenix to Las Vegas for $3 one-way:

San Diego to Los Angeles from $3 one-way:

Las Vegas to Los Angeles from $7 one-way:

Best Credit Card to Use

Since these are prices really cheap, it’s going to be more important to use a credit card that offers travel protection rather than points-earning. Your top options are going to be Chase Sapphire ReserveCiti Prestige or the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

Today Only: Get 10% Cash Back on Many Hotel Reservations

$
0
0

While it is more fun to use points to cover hotel stays than spend actual cash, we all know that sometimes cash is king when you need to book a place to stay. Even those who are pretty savvy with miles and points can sometimes forget the important step of checking cash-back sites before heading directly to a hotel’s homepage to book a stay with dollars.

Just like you may already go to an online airline shopping or cash back site before you order a new outfit or back to school supplies, you can do the same exact thing with some big hotel chains to put cash or miles back in your pockets. Not only is that step always important to maximize the money you spend on travel, but today is a “Travel Thursday,” which means that Ebates has higher than normal cash back rates for some travel-focused retailers — this includes several major hotel chains!

If you make a hotel reservation today by going through Ebates you can get up to 10% cash-back at Marriott, IHG, Hilton and more. In this case, Ebates is just a pass-through website that takes you to the hotels’ individual booking sites to make your reservations, so earning cash back does not impact your ability to earn points and use elite status benefits. It is just a great way to get cash-back after you complete your stay — at 10% back, it is a step that is probably worth the effort.

Earn Up To 10% Cash Back on Hotels Stays Booked Today

Marriott: 10% cash back

Hilton: Up to 10% cash back (though Gold and Diamond members annoyingly only get 1% back)

IHG: 10% cash back

There are some other increased travel-related increased cash back offers available on Ebates that you can browse here, but be careful to not make you actual hotel bookings on the Ebates site if you want it to be eligible for earning points and elite perks. Just use the Ebates site to get to the actual hotel’s booking site if you care about points and perks (and most of us here at TPG care very much about those things). Since you are still booking on the hotels’ sites as usual, you can pay with your Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points on the travel charge or even use a co-branded hotel credit card to rack up extra points that way.

At 10% cash back, Ebates likely has the best offering today for the hotel chains mentioned above — but generally speaking you will want to quickly compare cash back rates at Cashbackmonitor.com to see which site will give you the best payout when you are spending money for hotel stays. If you are looking for some other ways to maximize hotel reservations when you have to spend cash, check out this post.

If a trip to China has been on your to-do list, then you should consider booking now. Delta’s offering discounted award flights from the US to Shanghai (PVG). The airline had a similar sale in early July and is back with more deals at rock-bottom rates — round-trip flights start at just 40,000 miles.

Head over to Delta’s website and use the flexible date calendar to find the cheapest rates. You’ll need to book your ticket by August 15 to take advantage of the deal.

Departures are available from cities inlcuding Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), Baltimore (BWI), Charlotte (CLT), Newark (EWR), Washington DC (IAD), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago (ORD) and Philadelphia (PHL). Although many of the discounted fares are for basic economy, Delta allows basic economy passengers to travel with a carry-on bag (in addition to a personal item) and AA announced that it will follow suit beginning September 5, so you might want to consider them over United. There are no tricks to find these fares. Use Google Flights to search for your preferred departure and destination and then book through OrbitzExpedia or directly with the airline. If you want to make sure that your ticket includes a carry-on bag, you can use Google Flights’ newest feature, which allows you to filter out no-carry-on fares.

Deal Alert: Fly Premium Select from US to China for $747 Round-trip

We’re fans of Delta’s Premium Select, the carrier’s new class of service found on the Airbus A350 and select refurbished Boeing 777 jets. If you’ve been looking for an affordable way to test it out, now’s your chance. TPG Editor-at-Large Zach Honig spelled out the top nine things you need to know about Premium Select (which is Delta’s version of Premium Economy, found widely on international carriers), and Reviews Editor Nick Ellis reviewed the product on an A350 flight between Detroit and Tokyo.

Given how fresh the product is, pricing hasn’t been very kind. That makes today’s deal all the more alluring. We haven’t seen too many fare sales for Delta’s Premium Select, but it appears that quite a few US-to-China routes and dates are open for booking at less than $800 round-trip.

delta premium select
Delta’s Premium Select cabin on the Airbus A350

We’re seeing deals start at $747 all-in for travel from US cities to Shanghai (PVG) and Beijing (PEK), which is well below what you would typically expect to pay for these flights in standard economy. Dates seem to be relatively plentiful, including much of October, November and December. We’re also seeing impressive connection options, which will be good news for those who are a hop away from DTW and LAX.

We’d encourage you to test out departure airports as well as dates using a flexible search engine through Expedia or Orbitz. Delta’s A350 fleet to China currently routes only through DTW and LAX, with Seattle slated to gain an A350 flight to Tokyo (NRT) beginning March 1, 2019.

Airfare deals are typically only available on limited dates. However, if you’re using The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ll need to book directly with the airline or through the Amex Travel portal to get 5x MR points. Remember: Fares may disappear quickly, so book right away and take advantage of Orbitz or Expedia’s courtesy cancellation if you’re unable to line-up the time away.
